Haunted by the killing of his Palestinian childhood friend and fellow peace activist Aseel Aslih by Israeli police, Israeli filmmaker Roy Cohen creates an intimate cinematic letter across time. Drawing upon Aslih’s evocative teenage writings, Cohen revisits their friendship and searches his late friend’s words for the moral clarity and resilience needed to confront memory, complicity and the devastation unfolding in Israel and Palestine. Produced by Serge Gordey (Five Broken Cameras), Far From Maine is a deeply personal documentary about friendship, loss and the painful responsibility of looking unflinchingly at one’s own society.
