In 1994, Teishiro Minami launched Japan’s first Pride parade, inspiring some and infuriating others. Filmed over four years, Beyond the Fire draws upon intimate interviews and testimony as Minami, now in his nineties, looks back at the fights, fractures and victories that shaped a movement. Hiroaki Matsuoka’s compelling documentary is both the portrait of a complicated pioneer and the story of a defining early chapter in Japan’s LGBTQ+ history.
