After fleeing Egypt in the wake of revolution, an exiled activist arrives in Berlin, yearning for safety, reaching for breath. But before he can catch it, he’s placed in a refugee camp, steps away from far-right rallies chanting for his removal. Trapped between what he fled and where he’s landed, he must confront the cost of escape, the ache of memory, and what freedom really means.

Director Biography - Ahmed Awadalla

Ahmed Awadalla is a writer, researcher, and transdisciplinary artist. Their work explores decolonial perspectives on topics such as mental and sexual health, displacement, and identity. They have published in academic journals, magazines, and anthologies, using both storytelling and research to critically engage with and challenge dominant narratives.

As the director of "Queer Exile," I am deeply honored to share with you the journey and inspiration behind this profoundly personal yet collectively resonant story. Throughout human history, themes of mobility and displacement have left an indelible mark. Within the LGBTIQ+ community, the quest for a sense of belonging has been an enduring struggle.

"Queer Exile" explores the themes of rebellion, belonging, and homemaking, examining the profound challenges faced by those who traverse borders and navigate the intersection of identity, mobility, and queerness. "Queer Exile" is not just a narrative; it’s a meditation on what it means to live in exile and the unexpected friendships that spring out of this condition. It is a testament to the resilience and power of people navigating the complexities of societal marginalization.

The film draws inspiration from my personal journey from Cairo to Berlin. While

Germany prides itself as the most welcoming country to refugees, and Berlin projects

itself as a queer haven, the reality of the queer refugee experience often diverges from

these sweeping statements. This innovative project disrupts conventional narratives in

refugee storytelling by presenting the firsthand account of a queer refugee without any

mediation by the media for the very first time.
