Inspired by Dr. Yanique Redwood’s memoir, Skylark is a hybrid vérité and poetic documentary that explores weathering—the cumulative effects of racism-related stress on the body–and the possibility of healing for Black women. Through visual metaphors of movement and water, the film follows Yanique, a racial justice philanthropy leader who leaves behind a prominent career and the burnout inherent in the U.S. system of work to return to her homeland of Jamaica. Alongside stories of D’Lynn Jacobs and Temi F. Bennett, Skylark examines how systemic racism is carried in the body and the pathways Black women are forging toward liberation.
