A mother and daughter wake up on the morning of a party they're hosting, only to find that their wrists have been bound together by an unbreakable red string. They have to find a way to free themselves, while dealing with each other, and spending time together in a way they haven't done before.

Director Biography - Nathania Djuhar

Nathania is a filmmaker with roots from Singapore, Indonesia, and

China, passionate about telling underrepresented stories through

live action, animation, and anything magical realism.

Pursuing a career in development and aiming to tell stories that uplift communities, her journey brought her to the USC School of Cinematic Arts, where she is currently completing her MFA at the Peter Stark Producing Program. Her work revolves around grounded and emotionally-resonant storytelling, with an emphasis on creating a social impact as well as opportunities for lesser-seen creatives.

Prior to that, Nathania previously served as a coordinator at All3Media, working in international TV distribution across Europe and Asia. She previously also interned at M88 in talent and literary management, as well as at ShivHans Pictures in film development, and is currently the Film and TV Narrative Intern at Proximity Media.

When she’s not behind a camera or furiously pouring over scripts, you can find her at a dance studio or nerding out about history, mythology, and deep sea creatures. She will gladly tell you about anglerfish if you ask.

Director Statement

Most of us are far from the perfect children, but most parents are also far from the perfect parents. And yet, the relationship we have with our parents mirrors the phenomenon of quantum entanglement - the theory that two particles from the same origin that are entangled, will always remain connected through time and space, regardless of how vast the distance between them grows.

This film came from the musings of a wounded daughter trying to overcome her generational traumas. I often felt alone in a world where relying on familial love seemed so easy for everyone else, where the words “but she’s still your mother” were imparted on me over and over. The need and desire for familial connection is such a universal, human thing, but one that I felt I could never satisfy. What do you do when the love doesn’t help? Are we bound to our parents no matter what?

I wanted to explore these questions in a way that was specific to my upbringing and culture, yet still ubiquitous and relatable. A story that gently reminds us it’s okay to heal on our own, and that sometimes, the bravest step forward is the one we choose for ourselves.

This is a film for all my fellow wounded children, and one that I hope makes them feel a little more seen.
