On the edges of Botswana's vast Makgadikgadi salt pans — shimmering remnants of a prehistoric lake still visible from space — stand Africa's oldest living beings: the baobab trees. Extreme seasonal changes dominate all life in the pans. Scorching heat and dust give way to life-bringing rains, while the baobabs, for centuries, have withstood and adapted to the elements. They are sanctuaries of life, offering sustenance and refuge to the wildlife and people who seek them out in one of Africa's most inhospitable places.
