The Great March of Return is a short film by Jerusalemite artist Steve Sabella, created from a collage of over one thousand photographs taken by five award-winning Palestinian journalists from Gaza. Their images show the crowds who gathered every Friday from March 2018 for eighteen months to demand an end to the never-ending Israeli occupation.
Sabella combines these scenes with photographs of outer space, merging the hermetically sealed Strip with infinity. This monumental “present-day fresco” demonstrates a nation’s enduring struggle for liberation.
The Great March of Return has been described as “a Palestinian Sistine Chapel” for its echoes of Renaissance painting and its message of rebirth (curator Daniela Brignone and poet Mohammed al-Assad)
