There are several myths and lore about whistling in the woods at night. Various Indigenous, Canadian, Korean, Appalachian, and other cultures have stories, warnings about whistling in the dark. You never know what kind of evil you can call forth with the purse of your lips and letting a tune escape your mouth.

As for Pete? Well, Pete’s a dumb white dude who has no concept of any of that. He’s been partying around a campfire all night and drinking until he can’t see straight. At one point, he leaves the group and stumbles off to take a piss at the edge of the woods nearby. That’s when he lets the whistles fly.
